Sauna vs Office vs Lounge: Choosing the Right Backyard Build

The KOTA, the VERK and the Walzy Weekender solve three different problems. People usually arrive knowing they want a structure in the yard and not yet knowing which one. The honest answer has less to do with the building than with how your week actually runs.

Here is how to tell them apart.

Start with the hours, not the structure

A sauna gets used in short bursts, most days, usually at the end of one. Twenty minutes, often alone or with one other person. It earns its place through repetition.

An outdoor office gets used in long stretches, every working day. Eight hours, five days a week, which makes it the highest use structure on this list by a wide margin.

A lounge gets used in bursts too, but socially and unpredictably. A Friday evening, a long weekend, a birthday. Less often than the other two, but for longer, and with more people.

If you know which of those three patterns sounds most like your life, you already have your answer.

The sauna: recovery and ritual

The case for a sauna is that it changes a daily habit rather than adding an occasional treat. Heat after training, heat after a long day outside, heat in the dark months when getting outside otherwise stops happening.

The outdoor office: focus with a door on it

The VERK is a fully insulated backyard office and studio for one to two people, starting at $20,900 plus tax. Furnace and climate packages are available for Alberta winters.

The case for it is simple arithmetic. If you work from home, this is the structure you will spend the most hours inside, by a factor of ten over anything else on this list. It also does something a spare bedroom cannot, which is end the working day. You close a door and cross a yard, and the day is over.

Choose an office if you work from home more than two days a week, or if your current workspace is a corner of a room that is also something else.

The lounge: the room that holds the evening

The Walzy Weekender is a modular lounge and guest retreat starting at $19,239 plus tax. The Douglas is an outdoor bar and entertaining space starting at $17,479.

A lounge is the most social of the three and the least private. It extends the season on a yard you already like using, and it turns weather from a reason to go inside into part of the atmosphere.

Choose a lounge if you host often, if your yard is already where people end up, or if you want somewhere to put guests that is not the couch.

When the answer is two

The most common pairing on Alberta properties is a sauna with a lounge, and the reason is practical. A sauna session is twenty minutes. A lounge is what turns that twenty minutes into an evening. You come out of the heat, sit down somewhere warm, and stay.

The Barun Haus takes that logic and puts it in one structure, a pool house with a full sauna and an outdoor shower, starting at $52,679 plus tax. The Nava Haus is the same footprint without the sauna, with a bar window and storage instead, starting at $42,779.

Pairing also changes the order of the build. It is cheaper to plan two structures at once than to add the second one two years later, because the site work, the footings and the electrical can be scoped together.

What does not vary

Whichever you choose, the construction is the same. SPF framing, James Hardie or metal siding and metal roofing both carrying fifty year warranties, R14 insulation as standard with R22 available, and the Furda Builds Lifetime Workmanship Warranty. Every structure is fabricated off site, set on prepared footings and finished with licensed connections. Standard models are generally ready within three to four weeks, custom builds six to eight weeks or more.
